Cross hole sonic logging

Cross hole sonic logging

Introduction

Cross Hole Sonic Logging (CSL) is an advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technique used to evaluate the quality, integrity, and uniformity of deep foundation concrete.
At ASSOCIATED TESTING LABORATORIES, we use high-precision ultrasonic equipment to ensure that your piles and diaphragm walls are constructed defect-free and meet all safety standards.

What is Cross Hole Sonic Logging?

CSL testing works by transmitting ultrasonic pulses between access tubes installed inside a concrete pile.
Based on the speed, arrival time, and energy of the received signals, engineers can identify:

  • Voids

  • Honeycombing

  • Cracks

  • Segregation

  • Weak concrete zones

  • Construction defects

This makes CSL one of the most accurate and dependable methods for deep foundation quality assessment.

Importance of CSL Testing

CSL testing by ASSOCIATED TESTING LABORATORIES helps ensure:

  • Superior concrete integrity

  • Early detection of internal flaws

  • Compliance with design standards

  • Long-term structural reliability

  • Safe load-bearing performance

  • Verified construction quality

Standards We Follow

We perform CSL in accordance with:

  • ASTM D6760 – Standard Test Method for CSL

  • IS 14893 guidelines for pile testing

How the CSL Test is Performed

1. Installation of Access Tubes

Tubes (PVC/Steel) are placed inside the reinforcement cage during pile construction.

2. Filling with Water

Tubes are filled to enable smooth ultrasonic transmission.

3. Insertion of Transmitter & Receiver Probes

Two probes are lowered into adjacent tubes.

4. Ultrasonic Signal Transmission

The transmitter sends sound waves through the concrete to the receiver.

5. Data Recording

Any irregularity in signal speed or energy indicates potential defects.

6. Analysis & Reporting

Our experts analyze data using advanced software and provide detailed reports with 2D/3D visualization.

What CSL Testing Detects

  • Internal cracks

  • Voids and gaps

  • Segregation

  • Inclusion of foreign materials

  • Honeycombing

  • Bulging or necking

  • Low-quality concrete sections

Applications of CSL

CSL testing by ASSOCIATED TESTING LABORATORIES is ideal for:

  • Bored Cast-In-Situ Piles

  • Drilled Shafts

  • Diaphragm Walls

  • Secant Pile Walls

  • Retaining Structures

  • Marine & Bridge Foundations

  • Metro & Highway Projects

Advantages of CSL Testing

  • Highly accurate and sensitive

  • Detects deep internal defects

  • Suitable for large-diameter piles

  • Provides continuous data along pile depth

  • Generates visual analysis & tomography

  • Reliable for critical foundation structures

  • Fully compliant with global standards
