Half cell potential test

Half cell potential test

Introduction

The Half Cell Potential Test is a highly effective Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technique used to evaluate the corrosion activity of reinforcement steel inside concrete structures.
At [Your Company Name], we use advanced half-cell measurement equipment to provide accurate assessment of structural health, durability, and corrosion risk.

What is the Half Cell Potential Test?

The Half Cell Potential Test measures the electrical potential difference between embedded steel reinforcement and a reference electrode placed on the concrete surface.
This potential indicates the likelihood of corrosion in the reinforcement.

It does not measure corrosion rate but predicts the probability of active corrosion inside the concrete.

Purpose of Half Cell Potential Test

  • To evaluate the risk of reinforcement corrosion

  • To identify zones with active corrosion

  • To assess the durability of existing concrete structures

  • To support structural audit and rehabilitation planning

  • To complement other NDT tests like Carbonation, Rebound Hammer, and UPV

Standards Followed

We perform the Half Cell Potential Test in compliance with:

  • ASTM C876 – Standard Test Method for Corrosion Potential of Uncoated Reinforcing Steel

  • IS 13311 (Part 1 & 2) for supporting NDT procedures

How the Test Works

  1. The concrete surface is moistened (if required) for proper electrical conductivity.

  2. A reference electrode (commonly Copper-Copper Sulphate Electrode – CSE) is placed on the concrete surface.

  3. The electrode is connected to the reinforcing bar through a wire.

  4. A digital voltmeter records the potential difference.

  5. Multiple readings are taken in a grid pattern to develop a corrosion potential map.

Interpretation of Results (ASTM C876 Guide)

  • >-200 mV: Low probability of corrosion

  • -200 mV to -350 mV: Uncertain corrosion probability

  • <-350 mV: High probability of active corrosion

These guidelines help determine risk levels and appropriate repair strategies.

Applications of Half Cell Potential Test

The test is widely used for:

  • Old or deteriorated structures

  • Bridges, flyovers, and parking decks

  • Industrial plants and warehouses

  • Coastal & chemical-exposed structures

  • Buildings undergoing repair or retrofitting

  • Condition assessment before construction/renovation

Advantages of Half Cell Potential Test

  • Completely non-destructive

  • Identifies hidden corrosion activity

  • Helps prevent major structural failures

  • Useful for long-term maintenance planning

  • Provides clear corrosion potential mapping
